GloBird is an independent energy provider in Victoria. It offers budget plans to Victorian households and businesses who use electricity and gas. GloBird offers no lock in contracts or termination fees and claims to have some of the cheapest energy rates in Victoria.

GloBird Energy won the Mozo Experts Choice awards in 2017 for the following categories:

GloBird has pledged that it will only change its prices when network or wholesale prices force its hand. Customers will receive written notice before any rate changes.

With GloBird there are no lock in contracts, so customers are free to switch retailers if they are unsatisfied. Bills are typically issued monthly, and there are no fees for joining or leaving GloBird.

Nearly all of GloBird customers are on market offers, which are usually more competitive than standing offers.

GloBird offers three different electricity plans geared towards people who use varying amounts of electricity. Solar plans are also available; for details, see our separate section on solar plans.

Rates for home electricity plans depend on your distributor, and there are five distributors in Victoria:

  • Ausnet
  • Citi Power
  • Jemena
  • Powercor
  • United Energy

GloBird offers three different types of electricity tariff across its plans:

  • Single rate: one rate for all electricity usage
  • Time of Use – Peak/Off Peak: Pay more for peak usage (usually during weekdays) and less for off peak usage (usually over the weekends)
  • Flexible – Peak/Shoulder/Off Peak: pay more for peak usage (weekday afternoons/evenings) and lower rates for off peak (overnight) and shoulder usage (all other times).
GloSave

Good for small to average households who use up to an average amount of electricity.

  • Pay on time discount: 35% (including 1% direct debit discount)
EasySave

Low rates in exchange for automating your payments through direct debit and using e-billing and e-communications.

  • No pay on time discount available
Boost

Need an electricity boost? Large households or those who use more electricity can benefit from this plan.

  • Pay on time discount: 40% (including 1% direct debit discount)

GloBird offers two different household gas plans. As with electricity, rates vary depending on your distributor and your location. There are three gas distributors in Victoria:

  • MultiNet
  • Australian Gas Networks
  • Ausnet
GloSave

Good for small to medium gas users.

  • Pay on time discount: 35% (including 1% direct debit discount)
EasySave

Good for customers who are happy to automate their payments and use e-communications in exchange for lower prices.

  • No pay on time discount available

GloBird offers plans for small to medium sized business energy customers. Rates will depend on your gas and electricity distributors, as well as your location within the distribution area.

BizSave: Electricity

BizSave customers can choose from a single rate tariff, time of use tariff, flexible tariff with controlled load, or flexible tariff with solar.

  • Pay on time discount of 15%
  • Direct debit bill payment discount of 1%
BizSave: Gas

BizSave tariffs are charged in tariff blocks. For example, you may be charged one rate for the first 1400 megajoules (MJ) of usage per day, and a higher rate for the remainder of your usage.

Gas rates are also based on the season. Peak rates (usually May – September) are higher than off peak rates (usually October – April).

  • Direct debit bill payment discount of 1%

GloBird offers two solar plans to its electricity customers: Solar Plus and Solar Basic. As with its other electricity and gas plans, the rates, terms and conditions of your plan may vary depending on your distributor.

Note that GST is calculated before the solar rebate is deducted, as the solar feed-in part of your bill is not subject to GST.

Solar Plus

Solar Plus offers GloBird’s largest solar feed-in tariff: 15 cents per kiloWatt hour, up to 12kWh per day. Customers also get a 35% pay on time discount on their bill, including a 1% direct debit discount. If you opt not to pay using direct debit you are still eligible for a 34% pay on time discount.

Solar Basic

Solar basic pays 10 cents per kWh for the electricity generated by your solar panels that is fed back into the grid.

BizSolar

Business customers with solar electricity can receive a feed-in tariff of 10 cents per kWh.

GloBird promises its customers that discounts will remain in place for a minimum of one year after you sign up with the company. Discounts depend on your energy plan, but may include:

  • Pay On Time Discount: Discount for paying your bill in full by the due date
  • Direct Debit Discount: Discount for paying your bill via direct debit

If you are getting a concession from the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS), it will be indicated on the front page of your electricity bill in the Electricity Charges Summary.

Concessions are charged as a percentage on your total bill paid; this means that you may see two concession amounts on your bill. One is based on the total bill without discounts, while the other is based on the total bill with discounts. This is common practice with electricity bills.

You can set up autopay so your bills are automatically paid on time. This ensures that you receive the pay on time discount and won’t forget to pay your bill.

The money will be direct debited on the due date for the bill. You can opt to direct debit with your credit card (no fees are charged) or through your bank account. Direct debit can be set up online or by downloading and completing the direct debit form.

Alternatively, you can also pay your bill using the following methods:

  • BPay
  • Credit card over the phone
  • Credit card online
  • By cheque via post
  • In person at the Post Office or Commonwealth Bank

Fees may apply to some payment methods, such as paying at the Post Office. Refer to your bill for further details on your payment options.
