iinet Broadband

iinet is a major internet service provider owned by TPG. They have a wide range of internet plans for those with NBN, DSL, and ADSL2+.

iinet also offers location-based cable, Fibre to the Business (FTTB), and Fibre to the Home plans to customers in certain states. Ahead, we’ll compare the major iinet plans and see how they stack up to the competition.

iinet Broadband offers customers four different NBN plans to choose from. They offer two NBN tier 12 options, an NBN 50, and NBN 100 plan.

You can also choose whether you want a 24-month contract or the flexibility of a no lock-in contract.

The former comes with a $0 activation fee and Fetch TV included with the unlimited data plans. The latter excludes Fetch TV and has a $79.95 activation fee. Reading the fine print, however, reveals a $59.99 activation fee for the optional Fetch entertainment bundle, making the startup costs similar for both options.

Still, you’ll have the flexibility to choose to exit your plan at any time if you decide on the no lock-in contract option.

iinet Broadband NBN Plans
Plan NBN Tier Typical Evening Speed Data Calls Price/Month (minimum)
Basic 12 9.6 Mbps 500 GB Pay as yo $59.99
Basic Unlimited 12 9.6 Mbps Unlimited Pay as you go $69.99
Standard Plus 50 46 Mbps Unlimited Local & standard national calls $79.99
Premium 100 78.5 Mbps Unlimited Pay as you go $99.99

Not all households have moved over to NBN yet, and those that have recently moved might be confused about the speed tiers.

Once you get the hang of the pricing and speed options from NBN plans, they’re relatively straightforward. Take a look at our infographic for more information about which NBN speeds are best for your needs.

NBN 12

NBN 12 is the slowest NBN tier available, and is best for small households without much use for fast internet.

This speed is ideal for those who don’t stream or regularly use the internet – and thus don’t want to pay high prices for enhanced capabilities they won’t use.

NBN 25

This is the “standard” speed that will serve the needs of most medium-sized homes.

Streaming and surfing the internet will be fast enough for most applications, so long as too many people aren’t using the internet at the same time. However, this speed tier is being phased out by many companies in favour of NBN 50.

NBN 50

NBN 50 is the second-fastest speed that will be high enough for most users. You will be able to stream video and game to your heart’s content with this tier

NBN 100

NBN 100 is the fastest tier, and is ideal for those who need top-notch internet connections.

Those who want access to the highest upload speed (used for live streaming and posting videos) may prefer an NBN 100 plan for the fastest connection.

The NBN rollout is not yet complete, which means that many households are still relying on ADSL internet connections. iinet has plans for those with Naked DSL and ADSL2+ connections.

Traditional ADSL2+ connections use a splitter to allow a home phone and internet connection. Naked DSL does not require a landline, so you can save on the cost of line rental.

However, Naked DSL is often more expensive to install, so it is not always as cost-effective as it may seem. Both ADSL2+ and Naked DSL offer similar download speeds of up to 24Mbps.
iinet Broadband customers waiting on the NBN can sign up for one of these plans in the meantime, then switch to NBN as it becomes available.

DSL and ADSL2+ plans
Standard Plan Advanced Plan Standard Plan Advanced Plan
Data 500 GB Unlimited 500 GB Unlimited
Calls Pay as you go Pay as you go Pay as you go Pay as you go
Entertainment Offer (Yes/No) No Yes No Yes
Price/Month $59.99 $69.99 $59.99 $79.99

One of the primary differences between the DSL and ADSL2+ plans is their activation fee. ADSL2+ has a $0 startup fee on 24-month contracts and a $79.99 fee for the no lock-in option.

Naked DSL has cheaper call rates with no line rental fee, while ADSL2+ includes phone line rental.

Naked DSL is a bit more expensive in the startup department. It will cost $79.95 to start a 24-month contract and $99.95 for the no-lock contract. We should note that monthly payments for a 24-month unlimited plan are cheaper with Naked DSL, however.

You can choose to bundle some entertainment features with any iinet broadband plan – NBN or otherwise.

As we’ve already covered, some of the higher-end internet plans come with an optional Fetch entertainment offer when you sign up for a 24-month contract.

The streaming offer gives you access to Netflix, YouTube, and Stan streaming, but you can add some other channels by paying extra.

Those who opted for the no lock-in contract options can still add a Fetch box for $5 a month. You can add a box to a second room for another $10 per month.

iinet Broadband also allows you to bundle an International Call Package with your broadband plan. This bundle will cost you an extra $10 a month and give you access to the top 20 international destinations around the world.

All iinet 24-month broadband plans include a WiFi modem for $0 upfront. You can also purchase an iinet TG789 modem for $89 upfront with a month-to-month contract.

Of course, if you already have a WiFi modem, you can use it with your iinet plan and don’t need to purchase or receive a new one.

iinet no longer offers mobile broadband hardware and services to their customers. They stopped selling these products and plans in October of 2015.

It’s possible for customers who had mobile plans before this change to keep their service after the change. You can even swap plans if you choose to but will have to visit the iinet website and navigate through their portal.

New customers who are interested in mobile broadband plans will have to look elsewhere.

iinet also offers Cable, FTTB, and FTTH plans for those with the available technology. The cable and FTTH connections allow you to bundle entertainment with your plan as well. All of these contracts are either 24 months or no lock-in.

iinet only provides one cable plan, with 90 Mbps typical evening speeds, local and national calls, and Netphone. Your can choose whether you want a 24-month contract or no contract terms.

FTTH and FTTB plans offer more choice, as you can see in our tables below.

iinet presents a variety of pricing options, meaning they have something that will fit almost any budget. They’re a large provider, but their customer satisfaction and feedback seems positive, which isn’t always the case with these big broadband companies.

Small broadband providers that are trying to make a name for themselves often undercut the prices and data offerings of big companies like iinet. Since this is the case, you might be able to find something cheaper in your area if you look hard enough.

Still, iinet presents good value for the price of their plans, and have a wide enough variety that appeals to customers with different needs.
