Optus is the second-largest telecommunications company in Australia, and its name is Latin for ‘to choose’. Optus offers a range of broadband services, including home and mobile broadband.
Its mobile network covers 98.5% of the Australian population, including metro, regional, and rural areas. It’s fastest network is Optus 4G Plus, which reaches 96.5% of the population.
Over 1 million Australians use Optus for home broadband internet access. For wifi at home, just connect a wireless router to your modem.
There are three ways you can get Optus home internet:
ADSL is internet through your phone line. It uses the existing copper wire phone network to give you internet access. Customers in the Optus DSL and Optus DSL Direct areas can access this type of connection.
Optus offers two types of ADSL:
Both types of ADSL are suitable for normal internet activity such as web browsing and emails. Optus DSL customers cannot access entertainment bundles.
Cable is a high-speed broadband network. It uses optical fibre and coaxial cables that enter the property from the street. Cable is three times faster than ADSL. If cable is available in your area, it may be an option worth considering.
NBN is the National Broadband Network and it is still being rolled out across Australia. Homes and businesses that can connect to the NBN can enjoy faster speeds with more devices in simultaneous use.
Existing Optus broadband and ADSL customers can switch over to Optus NBN when the NBN reaches their home.
Optus Home Broadband Plans
Available plans will depend on your location and the type of internet connection you choose. The NBN is offered in varying speeds, with NBN 12 being the slowest and NBN100 the fastest.

Optus mobile broadband is geared towards people who need wireless internet on the go. It uses the Optus 3G and 4G Plus mobile networks to deliver internet access to a customer’s device, such as a mobile phone or tablet.
Devices must be compatible with the Optus network. There are three different ways to get Optus mobile broadband to your device:
Optus USB Modem
Plug this modem into your device’s USB port and transmit internet access from the Optus mobile network.
Use a WiFi Modem to transmit wireless internet access to multiple devices at once, at home or on the road (as long as you can get an Optus signal).
Data SIM Card
Use a data SIM card that inserts into your compatible mobile device, just like you do with your smartphone.
Optus Mobile Broadband Plans
With Optus mobile broadband, data can be shared across multiple devices. You can choose from contract plans (usually 12 or 24 months) or flexible prepaid plans.
Contract plans often come with a modem and a device that can be upgraded for a $99 after 12 months on a 24 month plan. Contract plans can also be bundled with Optus mobile phone services for a discount of $10/month.
Optus mobile broadband plans are based on the amount of data you use each month. Optus will send you data alerts when you have used 50%, 85%, and 100% of your monthly data. You can also check your data usage in your online account.
Each extra GB used beyond your plan allowance costs $10. If you need to cancel your plan early, you’ll just need to pay out the balance on your tablet.

Prepaid Mobile Broadband
If you prefer not to sign up for an ongoing contract, Optus provides prepaid mobile broadband services. You’ll have to purchase a device (USB or wireless modem) with a prepaid SIM. If you have your own device, you can just buy a prepaid SIM card.
When you run out of data, simply recharge the SIM to get more.
To recharge, you can use the following options:
For wireless internet at home, Optus offers home wireless broadband that you can set up on your own. You’ll receive a wireless broadband modem that can be connected instantly, without the need for a technician or a phone line.
Optus home wireless broadband transmits internet through the Optus 4G mobile network. In order to use the service, you will need to be covered by the network.
Optus offers its own plans as well as plans through VividWireless. VividWireless is owned by Optus, but customers will manage their account through the VividWireless platform and customer service team. The main advantage of VividWireless is the option for month-to-month plans instead of a 24-month plan.

Optus 4G Plus
Optus has its own high-speed 4G Plus network, which uses multiple frequencies to provide coverage. If you are in an area that isn’t covered by 4G Plus, or if you use a device that isn’t compatible with 4G Plus, you may be able to access the 3G network.
