Woolworths Credit Card Provider Guide

  • Woolworths offers two platinum VISA credit cards: the Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card and the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card.
  • Depending on the card, points can be redeemed towards a shop at Woolworths Group stores or on select Qantas purchases.
  • Your Woolworths credit card doubles as your Woolworths rewards card, allowing you to earn two different kinds of points with a single card.

Woolworths is best known as an Australian supermarket giant, but they also sell insurance, mobile phone plans, and credit cards. According to Woolies, 14 million Australians do their food shopping there every week.

We know that Woolworths has a reputation for fresh food, but how does that translate to their credit cards?

Woolworths offers two primary credit cards: the Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card and the Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card. Both are VISA cards issued by Macquarie Bank, and are covered by Visa’s Zero Liability policy. You can apply online for both cards, and they can be managed online or through the Woolworths Money mobile app.

If you apply for a Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card and are unable to obtain a minimum credit limit of $6,000, you may still be eligible for a Woolworths Everyday Credit Card. Woolworths does not advertise this card on its website, which lacks the platinum features available with the other two cards.

Woolworths Everyday Platinum Credit Card

The everyday platinum card lets you earn points through everyday purchases. These points are automatically converted to Woolworths shopping cards every four months. A minimum of 4,000 points earns you a $20 shopping card. Credit card points are uncapped.

These shopping cards can be used at Woolworths group stores, which include:

  • Woolworths Supermarkets
  • Big W
  • Caltex Woolworths branded fuel stations
  • BWS
  • Dan Murphys
  • Cellarmasters

This card currently has several bonus offers, including:

  • Bonus $50 Woolworths eGift Card when you spend over $150 every month for 3 months at Woolworths
  • No annual fee for the first year
  • 0% p.a. For 14 months on balance transfers

These bonus offers are available for a limited time and are subject to change.

In addition to bonus offers, the card offers the following regular cardholder benefits:

  • 10% off your shop once a month on certain dates
  • Up to 55 days interest-free on eligible purchases
  • Points converted to Woolworths shopping card
  • Purchase security insurance
  • WalletGuard: Up to $500 after wallet theft

Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card

The Qantas platinum card lets you earn Qantas points on your everyday purchases. It also has a higher annual fee than the Everyday platinum card.

The Qantas points can be redeemed on Qantas flights and a select range of products and services. There is no limit to the number of points you can earn, but point redemption is subject to the terms and conditions of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program.

This card currently has several bonus offers, including:

  • $99 annual fee for the first year, for a savings of $70
  • 0% p.a. For 14 months on balance transfers

These bonus offers are available for a limited time and are subject to change.

In addition to bonus offers, the card offers the following regular cardholder benefits:

  • 10% off your shop once a month on certain dates
  • Up to 55 days interest-free on eligible purchases
  • Overseas travel insurance
  • Interstate flight inconvenience insurance
  • Purchase security insurance
  • Extended warranty insurance
  • Transport accident insurance
  • Global hire car excess waiver

Woolworths’ credit cards are Platinum Visas, which means they come with a range of platinum features and perks, such as:

  • Visa Luxury Hotel benefits:
    • Free internet in your room
    • Complimentary continental breakfast
    • Room upgrades when available
    • Late check out when available
  • Round-the-clock concierge service
  • Platinum insurance offers

Woolworths’ credit cards also offer several standard features; terms and conditions may apply.

Woolworths Rewards

If you’ve shopped at Woolworths before, you may be familiar with the Woolworths Rewards card. This is not to be confused with the credit card points you can earn by using a Woolworths credit card.

Woolworths Rewards is a free loyalty scheme where you can earn rewards points for shopping at Woolworths group stores. When you scan your Rewards card at checkout, you earn 1 point for every $1 you spend. With every 2,000 Rewards points you earn, you get $10 off your next eligible shop.

When you have a Woolworths credit card, it also acts as your Woolworths Rewards card. Simply scan the barcode on the back of your credit card at checkout to earn Rewards points. This means you’ll earn credit card points plus Rewards points on your purchases.

The Woolworths credit cards receive mixed customer reviews. One concern is the length of time it can take to complete the application or balance transfer process. However, not all reviewers experienced dissatisfaction with these issues.

Customer service is generally average, with some customers very pleased and others disappointed.

Woolworths points system is good, provided you take advantage of the designated 10% off shopping days each month.

Complaints with the Qantas card usually centre on the fact that Woolworths has reduced the earning ability of the card since its inception. This is in line with other retailer credit cards, as rewards earnings are cut in order to save on fees.

Woolworths credit cards are good for people who shop frequently at Woolworths or Woolworths Group stores like BWS or Big W. If you pay attention to the discount shopping days and take advantage of them, you can reap more savings.

The Woolworths Qantas Platinum Credit Card can be a good fit for people who frequently fly Qantas, though its regular annual fee of $169 may put some off. Weigh up the cost against the points you are likely to earn before making a decision.

The interest rate on purchases is near the high end of average, so these cards may be better suited for users who are likely to pay their balance off in full each month. The introductory balance transfer deal may also be beneficial if you are diligent about paying down your balance before the 14 month 0% p.a. period comes to an end.
