First of all I enquired about my health fund costs
First of all I enquired about my health fund costs and in doing so I found that I could save a few dollars on my current fund. The people at compare club are not pushy in any way and it was a pleasure doing business with them. Then I asked about my electricity costs and the same thing applied I saved more money as I am in my 80s every little bit helps.

Common questions about comparing health insurance. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions, from students, we receive about health insurance:
Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is a mandatory requirement of your student visa in Australia, unless you have an exception. You must have OSHC for the period of time you are studying in Australia. This insurance means you can easily access medical services while you’re here – so you don’t need to worry about getting injured, or sick.
If your home country has a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia, you could access some subsidised health services with Medicare while you are studying here. However, your access to cover may be limited and you may still require OSHC. Medicare does not cover dental or optical services for example, even for Australians.
A single student policy typically only covers the student who is here to study. A dual family policy can cover the student, and either their partner, or child. If you are here to study, and you’re able to bring your family, there are family policies for overseas students as well.
This depends on your insurer (also called your health fund), the level of cover you choose, and the specific terms and conditions of your health cover policy. Most student health insurance policies include cover for:
- Hospital emergencies
- Emergency ambulance transport
- Doctors (this refers to general practitioners, or GPs)
Again, this depends very much on your health fund, and the specifics of the policy you choose. Items like dental or optical care, and not usually included in a basic policy. These are considered ‘extras’. See below for more information regarding this:
Hospital cover means that you are covered for treatment in a hospital, as well as in-hospital procedures and accommodation. What treatments you’re covered for, and the extent of that cover depends on the tier of cover you get.
Extras cover means that you’re covered for “extras” that aren’t covered by Medicare, but are routine to keep you healthy. This includes dental care, going to the optometrist for a new pair of glasses, or going to the physio.

- Private health insurance, subject to the level of cover held, allows permanent Australian residents to be treated as a private patient in hospitals and can help pay for services that Medicare doesn’t cover, including trips to the dentist and new glasses as well as specialists like orthopaedic surgeons, should you require one.
- Overseas Students Health Cover is for student visas and must be paid upfront for the length of time the visa is active. For example, if your visa is for two years, you must pay for two years of health cover upfront. All people on your visa must also be included on your cover. The cost of your OSHC policy depends on how long you are studying for in Australia, and the level of cover you require. It is also impacted by the number of people on your policy.
