The recent Federal budget included a single line that sent shock waves through Aussie households, already overburdened with the increasing costs of life basics: the cost of energy is set to rise - and rise.
Power prices look set to rise by an average of 20% this year, before lifting by a further 30% in 2023-24*. Gas prices could also jump by a whopping 44% over the next 18 months.
You can still take back the power when it comes to rising energy costs.
COMPARE & SAVESo, what can you do about it?
Power-saving measures are a good place to start. Here’s the top 3 easy ways to use less power (and save more $$$):
1. Use the Free Stuff:
When you’ve got a sunny day, see if you really need your lights on and your clothes dryer running (or even your hair dryer? Too far? Okay).
Use natural light to work by, plus free wind and sunlight to dry your laundry whenever you can. Using the weather instead of your clothes dryer saves around $79/year*. It doesn’t sound like much, but these costs add up.
2. Block for Free (not the social media kind):
Drawing your blinds and curtains early in the day, before the heat rises too much, keeps your home cooler for less. Keep it closed up until the cooler evening changes blow through.
3. Cold Water Washing:
Do you do your laundry in warm water? Try using cold water to save on that power bill. Also, consider curating your washing machine settings to the shortest wash cycle possible (e.g. some linens don't need a ‘heavy duty’ wash). It’s also a power saving move to hold off your wash until there’s a full load in there.
4. Find a Cheaper Energy Plan:
Compare providers, and plans, to make sure you’re on the best plan possible for both your electricity and your gas. There are more providers available than there used to be, so if you've not compared energy plans in over 2 years, there's a good chance you're on an uncompetitive plan and missing out on decent savings. Compare Club’s energy experts do the hard work for you by looking for the best offers on our panel. We help you switch and take care of the paperwork when we find you a better deal.
What's new in energy - July 2025
Power price hikes hit households: Electricity prices have increased from 1 July 2025, following the Australian Energy Regulator’s final decision on default market offer (DMO) rates.
Bill shock incoming: Power prices are rising by up to 8.7% in NSW — adding as much as $200 to annual bills.
Time to check your plan: With prices up, now’s a smart time to compare energy providers and make sure you’re still getting a competitive deal.
